I would regret it if I did not comment on the issue of Kim Davis, the County Clerk who has refused to give marriage certificates to gay couples.
She is a non issue to me. Her personal life is litmus test of all the mistakes one can make. She thinks she has found an answer in the apostolic ‘Christian’ church she is now a member of. That group and their beliefs are what she says she is basing her actions on.
Well, I don’t buy it. She is a bigot, plain an simple. She is using her religion as a front for her bigotry. Why do I say this?
1. Davis had choices in what organization she joined, the ability to analyze them, and finally the ability to decide if they are a good fit for them or not.
2. Davis was able to pick and choose parts of her belief systems, like a buffet of sorts. She could choose the church, the community, and the belief system, but leave the hate out of it. That is a valid choice that she is not making.
3. Davis, and most of us, use facts to back up beliefs and decisions they have already made. She chose a religion that backs up her narrow, self involved, perception of the world. She chose a religion that validates her hate based beliefs. And now she is going to be a foot note in the history books. Hopefully, a representative of the last gasp of anti gay marriage vitriol left out there. And she is the true villain here, not her church. She chose it, she embraced it, and she is wearing it like a shroud.
Why is she a non issue to me? She was predictable. 100%. Somebody, some idiot in my view, was going to do this. Push the issue to the point if self martyrdom and a short blast of fame (or infamy). I know there are several other clerks and judges doing their own pitiful last ditch anti-gay stances, but she is the light bearer right now.
Since this whole scene was predictable, and in some ways tragically comical, I give you the Marriage scene from the Princess Bride. Because I have been walking around saying ‘Mawaige’ in my head for days. And because I love the scene.
OK, so what do you think about Davis? Is she a dupe, a leader, a bellweather, or martyr?
